Sleeping Dogs Undead DLC ‘Unique’, says Developer

The Chinese connection makes it stand out, says Dan Sochan.

United Front Games is releasing Nightmare in North Point for Sleeping Dogs, which is a zombie themed DLC not unlike Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption. While zombies are something that’s a worn out trope to some, Sleeping Dogs producer Dan Sochan said to Eurogamer that there’s still life in those undead bones.

“Obviously there’s been other games that have done ‘the undead pack’,” Sochan said. “But we didn’t think it was an overdone genre because we’re looking at Chinese folklore.

“We’ve not seen Jiang Shi [a reanimated corpse from Chinese legends] in many games before – they appeared in a Castlevania title, but that’s about it. We’re also taking nods from Hong Kong cinema, films such as Big Trouble Little China. So we thought we could bring something that’s still fresh and interesting. It’s over the top, a bit cheeky.”

“The support we’ve gotten from the fans has been great,” Sochan concluded. “Sales have been really good. It’s always tough being new IP but people have embraced it. The myth that no games should release over the summer is fading away.”
