Even though Nintendo has bigger plans for its NX reveal sometime next year, that doesn't mean it'll forget about the Wii U. The console will probably receive its best games in 2016, with a number of returning favorites and new titles to keep players engaged.

On that note, we have a list of the best games coming out on the Wii U in 2016.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Announced out of nowhere, the HD version of one of the best Legend of Zelda games can't come soon enough. Twilight Princess will let players revisit some familiar territory in a whole new light, while at the same time getting back into the gameplay we've come to know and love from the series. On top of that, the introduction of a new Wolf amiibo, packed in with the game, will no doubt leave fans in a daze when it arrives on March 4th.

Lego's Marvel's Avengers

Following the success of Lego Marvel Super Heroes, WB Games returns to the mighty franchise once again, this time specifically focusing on adventures surrounding the Avengers characters. Featuring events from the film, Age of Ultron and other spin-offs (including a possible add-on for the forthcoming Civil War), this Lego adventure looks like fun. It'll feature several playable characters from the Marvel lexicon, and should also answer the question, "Who's stronger – Lego Hulk or Lego Iron Man Hulkbuster?"

StarFox Zero

Initially set for release this past November, Shigeru Miyamoto and the team at Platinum Games opted to delay StarFox Zero until everything was just right. Thankfully, it looks like it'll be worth the wait, featuring a unique control style that makes proper use of the GamePad, as well as plenty of high-flying (and ground-running) antics for StarFox fans to get into. Beyond that, the visuals look beautiful, among the best games we've seen on the Wii U. We're definitely looking forward to flying in StarFox's skies again – even if it means dealing with Slippy.

Pokken Tournament

Considering the immense success of the Pokemon franchise, it was only a matter of time before it would get its chance to shine on the Wii U. However, no one expected Bandai Namco to step up and make a unique 3D Pokemon fighting game. Featuring a number of favorite characters from the series, Pokken Tournament should be fun for all ages when it makes its debut in spring 2016. Dibs on Pikachu!

Mighty No. 9

We've been waiting a long time for Keiji Inafune's next side-scrolling adventure, ever since it found success on KickStarter. Thankfully Inafune, working alongside Deep Silver, is ready to unveil this spiritual Mega Man successor. With a sharp gameplay system that includes plenty of challenges and tricks, and beautiful visuals that bring this anime-style world to life, Mighty No. 9 should be nothing short of, well, mighty.

The Legend of Zelda

Finally, as if Twilight Princess HD wasn't enough to get excited about, don't forget there's an all-new Legend of Zelda game coming our way later this year. Bits and pieces of the game have been revealed thus far, but we should know a lot more by the time E3 rolls around, with revamped game mechanics, a gorgeous, wide open world to explore and hours of missions to complete. This one is definitely worth getting excited over.
