Super Mario Odyssey is finally here, and Mario’s latest adventure is quite a bit different than any other Mario title we’ve seen in the past. There are a lot of changes to the way that the world works compared to previous Super Mario games, and a lot of the new features can be a bit overwhelming at first, which is why we’ve put together this helpful assortment of Super Mario Odyssey tips and tricks to assist you in your journey to save Peach and bring peace back to the kingdoms of Mario’s world.

Explore the World

Super Mario Odyssey is bigger than any Mario adventure we’ve ever seen, and each kingdom that Mario and Cappy visit is full of wonder, nooks, and all kinds of crannies just waiting to be explored. The key to seeing and experiencing everything that the game has to offer is to explore, and always be ready to let yourself become lost in the world around you. Collectibles, secret areas, and even new characters can be found in the most unlikely of places, and you’ll never know how far you can go until you try. So, if you want to see everything that Super Mario Odyssey has to offer, make sure you aren’t rushing through each area, and just take your time exploring the world you’ve been given.

Get Dressed

One of the coolest features that we’ve found in Super Mario Odyssey is the ability to change Mario’s outfit. These items include his hat and suit, and there are a ton of different outfits available. While these outfits don’t offer any kind of statistical differences for our capped hero, they do give fans a nice way to mix things up, and they make for a pretty stellar collectible item as well. So, if you want to 100% the game, and collect every item that you can, then don’t forget to keep an eye out for new outfits when you visit different kingdoms.

Learn Mario’s Limits

Super Mario Odyssey introduces quite a few unique features and moves to the mix of Mario controls, and you’ll be having to learn a lot as you set out on this new adventure. That being said, Mario does have limits, and knowing those limits is going to be extremely vital to surviving the various kingdoms that you’ll explore. Make sure you take note of the controls and abilities that Mario has available to him—both with and without Cappy around—and be sure to utilize them whenever possible to help push your progress forward. You can find a full breakdown of the controls in the Official Prima guide for Super Mario Odyssey, so make sure you pick that up today for in-depth details about all the controls and buttons.

Capture and Collect

Most of the enemies in Super Mario Odyssey can be captured and used to fuel Mario’s new powers, which allow him to take on their form, as well as some of their abilities. This is extremely useful, as you’ll often need to capture and take on the form of things like Paragoombas and even frogs to earn abilities that will help you reach new places you couldn’t reach otherwise. So try to keep an eye out for enemies you can capture, and use them to your full advantage to reach new heights and find all of the secrets hidden in Super Mario Odyssey.

These are just a few of the important things you’ll need to keep in mind when you start playing Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch.
