Knowing the Territory and Characters in Valkyria Chronicles
Going into Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, the thing you’ll have to realize about this game is that the battles can be quite difficult. In fact, there are scenarios where an enemy can get off a long shot and take you down for the count very quickly, so there are a couple of things you’ll want to keep in mind about this.
First, you can’t win every battle the first time around. Even if you have a good army behind you, sometimes the enemy can be too tough and you’ll be forced to reorganize. You can formulate a good strategy or try something new against them, but occasionally you’ll need to figure something else out. As you run into this scenario in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, it’s best to take a look at your map and figure out a way around that army, so you can add to your team and then come back when you’re good and ready.
The second thing you’ll want to do is make sure you have a stable team watching your back. After all, you’re not fighting this war on your own – you’ll have several allies aiding you in battle. Sometimes you’ll have to experiment to see what each character brings to the table. The more devastating effects they deliver to enemies (especially the Positive Effects, which go a long way when it comes to damage), the better off you’ll be.
In fact, Rosie and Alicia are your two best bets in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. They’re able to provide a number of extra command points which can enable you to get extra damage on enemies, which is good when you run across tougher ones. Add them to your party as soon as you can, and you’ll see their abilities put to good use almost instantly.
Make sure you enable Damage Boost when you can throughout the game. This will give them greater accuracy when hitting enemies, provided they’re close enough to get within your targeting range. You’ll also be able to use it for the entirety of your turn, which means additional hits on foes. You can probably even clean out a few bosses within lesser turns as a result, so definitely apply it.
Balancing Your Attacks in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered
Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind is that you can balance out your attacks with your army. For instance, you can have lancers deliver a substantial amount of damage to enemies while you save the larger gun on your tank to deliver the final blow, or perhaps even the other way around, softening them with a large shot then moving in with smaller forces for the kill. Grenades can go a long way to damaging foes as well, and not just with explosive firepower, but also blasting soldiers outside of a camp – ideal if you need to grab a flag or another resource.
This isn’t the case with all enemies in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered – remember to keep an eye out for tougher forces you simply can’t defeat – but by balancing the attacks within your party, you’ll see substantial results across the board. Make sure you keep them refreshed – engineers are on your team, and one of their primary purposes is keeping the lancers good to go. Of course, their ability to carry explosives like grenades and mines pays off in spades as well.
In addition, make sure you target Aces in an army as quickly as you can. Some of these missions are timed, and the faster you can take out an Ace, the more rewards you’ll receive for your team. Plus, taking out the Ace in a group in Valkyria Chronicles Remastered makes the rest of the forces fairly easy to clean up (except for, again, tougher forces). So concentrate your fire when it counts, clean house and watch the rewards stack up with an A rank (the highest rank available).
Finally, make sure you utilize a sniper as often as you can. You don’t need a full team of them, mind you, but having one in your arsenal – guy or girl – can really give you an advantage against enemy snipers or taking out an Ace very quickly. They can knock out smaller targets with utmost precision, in case your ground troops can’t get the job done. Keep one of them in tow as much as you can.
